COMPILED vs NON-COMPILED
-------------------------------------------------------------
Miva Merchant applications versions 4.13 and before are non-compiled versions. This means that the source code was easier to modify per demand. The latest versions of Miva Merchant, 4.14 and above, are now only offered in the compiled format. This means that the source code has been altered and the purchase of the compiler tool [www.miva.com] is required if you wish to modify the application. There are 3rd Party support modules for just about any special needs situation.
-------------------------------------------------------------
OPENUI vs MMUI
-------------------------------------------------------------
OpenUI is an alternative User Interface module for Miva Merchant. It is easier, in some cases, to customize the standard Miva Merchant User Interface module (MMUI). There are a lot of extension modules that have been created by developers that customize Miva Merchant's look and feel (user interface). Many of these module require that OpenUI be installed first. By using OpenUI, you can use a combination of extension modules to customize your store.

P3P - INTERNET EXPLORER 6 UPDATE
-------------------------------------------------------------
New information about the problem has just come to us this morning via users group discussions. Specifically, the redirect during checkout is caused by a problem with Internet Explorer. More detailed information, and a fix for the problem, can be found at the following.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?amp;amp;displaylang=en&familyid=254EB128-5053-48A7-8526-BD38215C74B2&displaylang=en
Unfortunately, Microsoft has not yet issued the fix to this problem as an automatic Windows update. This means that the fix available at the above URL is one which will require users to manually install it. While it is unclear exactly when the fix will be made available in an automatic update, it's at least more likely that it will when a new service pack update is released.
In the mean time, it is our advice to Miva Merchant users that they notify their customers of the need to install the Microsoft Internet Explorer update if they are experiencing the effects of this problem during the checkout sequence.
Thanks very much,
Miva Support Engineering

MIVA MERCHANT UPGRADE NOTES
-------------------------------------------------------------
BTW, you should NEVER disable 3rd party modules when doing an upgrade. You are likely to lose your configuration data. If you reinstall the module you will definitely lose the data. The proper procedure is to copy all of the 3rd party modules to the new path BEFORE running upgrade.mvc.

CUSTOM FIELDS NOTES:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
For those interested in this new feature, here is a brief FAQ so you
don't get your hopes up.
1. Can I place these fields in different locations on the product
screen?
NO It goes under price and that is it.
2. Can I just display the value of the field and not the name?
NO It displays the field name (i.e. New Product) plus a colon, and then
the value (i.e. New Product: New)
You can use an image and html for the value such as
.
I was able to hack it by putting
as the value. That just displayed the new image.

CHECKOUT AND BASKET LINKS:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Make sure there are no line breaks in the code.
Put %OUI% at the very beginning of the global header or whatever field this belongs in and then use the following code:
Checkout
Basket
With Customer Login Disabled:
Checkout
Basket
For static pages:
/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=BASK
/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=OINF
I get a text in the basket as - "Your shopping basket is currently empty." - can I remove this text some how?
Put this in your basket screen header
%OUI%%begin_empty%Keep shopping, dude!%end_empty%

HISTORY OF MIVA
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Date: 06/29/2004 15:43:46
Author: Austin, Joe
To: miva-users@miva.com
I was one of the original authors of htmlscript along with some friends. That was in 1995. The company htmlscript Corporation was formed in mid 1996. Jon Burchmore came aboard in 1997 and single handedly re-wrote the engine to uniquely support both the old htmlscript syntax and the new Miva Script syntax. Jon is still with the company and is now our VP of Development. Derek Finley, now our VP of Marketing, has been with the company since the beginning.
In 1998 we renamed the company to Miva Corporation and in late 1998 we came out with the first version of Miva Merchant. At that point the company was a handful of people. I think about five or so. We didn't start making money until we had Miva Merchant -- there is not alot of money in scripting engines.
The name Miva is derived from the hieroglyphic name for cat -- the picture of a milk basin followed by the picture of a bird and pronounced Me Waa. My friend Boris kept on pronouncing it Miva, so a new company name was born. Choosing a cat was random and was simply the first word in a book on hieroglyphics that I had picked up because it looked cool. I also have a cat which, as I recall, was another reason and finally it made sense because of electronic (cat)alog -- a tie in to e-commerce.
In 1999 the company grew very rapidly on the success of Miva Merchant. I think we had about 22 or so people by the end of 1999. We raised about three and a half million dollars in 2000 mainly from two Japanese corporations. The fact that it was Japanese money is incidental -- there is no other connection with the Japanese.
In 2002 we finally delivered on the Miva Script Compiler. It took longer to develop than we had thought. The htmlscript syntax and macros were dropped from the engine.
In September 2003, at the Miva Conference, we announced that we were selling the company to FindWhat.Com (NASDAQ:FWHT) in a (approx) $8mm transaction. I had actually been working on the deal since April of that year. On 1 January 2004 the deal closed and I remain on as General Manager.
This year we will be announcing Miva Merchant 5 and Miva Empresa/Mia 5. General information will be out in the next few weeks. Alot
of information will be available at the fifth annual Miva conference. I hope to see all of you at the conference.
